Awamutu Grove

Awamutu Grove is located in Waiwhetu, Lower Hutt. The name “Awamutu” means “end of the river” in Maori. In the 1800s, the Awamutu River was a large and swampy river that enclosed both Udy’s Island and Frethey’s Island, the latter of which is now Hutt Park Raceway. Awamutu Grove is situated on the site of Udy’s Island, which is roughly the same location as it was in historical maps.
