Brian Hughes Road

Brian Hughes Road is named after John Brian Hughes, a dedicated plumber and avid cyclist, played a significant role in the Wainuiomata’s growth and development. He was known to everyone as Brian Hughes, and he arrived in Wainuiomata in the early 1960s. Brian and his family settled at number 71 Karaka Street, where they built their cherished family home. Brian’s contributions to the community were multifaceted. He worked for W. Dell Plumbing, contributing to the building boom of the 1960s in Wainuiomata. In the 1970s, his passion for cycling led him to assume the presidency of the Wainuiomata Cycling Club for an impressive seven years, mentoring young athletes and guiding them toward success. In the 1980s, Brian established IB HUGHES Plumbing, later evolving into IBH Construction, which continues to thrive and provide employment opportunities to locals.

The name was requested by the development (Friday Homes) and approved by the Wainuiomata Community Board on the 4th November 2020 i

The private road off Brian Hughes Road was named at the same time, Peter Tapp Way.
